Cutting Through Barriers
Cutting Through Barriers
Cutting Through Barriers investigates the physical and symbolic structures that define borders, regulate movement, and shape experiences of belonging. Using wire mesh, spatial delimitation, and the visual language of security fencing, the installation examines how boundaries operate across social, economic, and political contexts. The work is part of an ongoing exploration of migration, contemporary identity formation, and the relationship between bodies and divided space. The use of color introduces a deliberately softer, potentially feminine visual language into a structure associated with restriction, surveillance, and control.
This tension complicates the authority of the fence: what appears rigid and defensive becomes vulnerable, permeable, and open to reinterpretation. Through this material transformation, the work considers how boundaries—and the systems of power they represent—might be crossed, negotiated, or reimagined rather than accepted as permanent.
